Alice Goldbloom

Finding the right editor is like finding the right therapist. I believe in nurturing creativity, making writers feel supported, and encouraging them to produce their best work. I’ll tell it like it is, and cheer for you all the way to the finish line.

My clients include nonfiction, creative nonfiction, and memoir writers, as well as business writers. They are writers who believe their best work comes from collaborating with a highly skilled editor.

Before becoming a freelance editor, I worked for two decades in communications and public relations, providing writing and editing services at the highest levels of business and government.

I am a life-long learner, and in addition to a Master’s degree in History from Carleton University, I studied creative writing at the University of Toronto and editing at Simon Fraser University.

My Editing Services

Developmental Editing

You receive a detailed written analysis of your manuscript, including places you can reorganize the structure or develop your ideas further. My feedback will improve your text’s organization, flow, and effectiveness. This stage of editing is often combined with stylistic or copy editing.

Stylistic/Line Editing

I clarify meaning, ensure coherence and flow, and improve the style of sentences and paragraphs while maintaining your voice and tone. You’ll also receive a detailed style sheet showing authorial and editorial decisions.

Copy Editing

Correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and usage are essential for consistency. I also check formatting and compliance with in-house or published style guides and double-check your facts, which is especially important if you’re self-publishing, since, you’ll want to ensure accuracy and error-free writing.

Proofreading

This is the last editing stage just before publication, where I check the final version of your text for typos and errors. I enjoy proofreading short pieces, but for longer manuscripts, I suggest you work with someone specializing in proofreading.

Writing/Rewriting

I compose new manuscripts or parts of a manuscript based on your ideas and research.

Author Coaching

I provide coaching for a book or other writing projects. My coaching includes a critical path to stay on track and ongoing check-ins, support, and guidance.

My rates depend on several factors, including the length, complexity, type of editing required, and timeframe.
